Sarah Ruhl's adaptation of Virginia Woolf's novel tells a story of discovery, heartbreak and growth through the eyes of Orlando, a boy at the start of the play but a woman by the end. For UCI's production, director Annie Loui created a language of body movement that reinforced a beautiful surrealistic narration of Orlando's life, as he/she travels from Elizabethan times to the modern day in search of love and meaning.

The constantly-warping timeline of the show presented me with the opportunity to control the pace and mood with musical underscore. Even the sound cues, from the crackling of ensuing frost to the mechanical world of the 20th century, take on a musical quality. The soundscape of the show intensifies as Orlando becomes more and more overwhelmed by the world.

Sounds from the Show

Orlando's Wedding, Explosion into the 20th Century

Orlando's great wedding splinters into sensory chaos, sending Orlando careening through time into the harsh and mechanical 20th century.

The 'Timeless' Theme

Plays at the beginning and the end of the show, when Orlando feels creative and introspective.

Exloring Orlando's Childhood Home

It's Orlando's first day home in over a century. She explores the halls of her great house, reminiscing.

The Great Frost

"When, with suddeness and severity, came: The. Great. Frost" — a sound effect sequence created from scratch from a variety of sources, including styrofoam packing peanuts and my own voice.

Sasha and Orlando Flirt

The underscore as Orlando and Sasha flirt at the Queen's dinner table, much to the dislike of the Queen and the other lords/ladies.

Sasha's Betrayal

The underscore to Orlando's first moment of heartbreak, as he sees Sasha drift away on the ship of the Russian embassy with one of the sailors.
